Our washer is broken, which is quite a dilemma when a family washes approximately 5 loads of laundry a day. As entertaining as our broken-appliance predicaments may be (our dishwasher is also in need of repair, perhaps we over-use that too?), the children provide much more entertainment in this household.
This morning, a repair man came to give his synopsis (which wasn't good). He was hardly through the door, before Mom shooed the boys to the basement. We may enjoy their noise, but not everyone else does. They were in the midst of a game of Trouble (a family favorite since Christmas), and as they proceeded to the basement, two of the boys began to bicker amongst themselves. The third boy, snapped quickly, "Knock it off! The man is here. Be on your best behavior."
That coming from a six-year-old left me quite impressed. He quieted his older two brothers as quickly as their fight had begun. My smiles turned to a sigh as I wondered why they couldn't remember not to fight all the time.
Nevertheless, they stayed in the basement, happy and content, until "the man" left our house. Boys will be boys, and they had their arguments throughout the day (mostly a battle of the wills), but I could smile and remember that they at least know how to be on their best behaviors when "the man" is here. And that is quite a consolation.
